Whenever someone drinks hot tea, they are unknowingly sampling a commodity that has a story spanning centuries. From ancient China, to Colonial Europe to today, this drink has been well loved and bartered. If you are a tea drinker and would like to experience a piece of history on the timeline of tea, head to Poplar Hill Mansion Thursday September 11 at 11:30 a.m.

“We wanted to host a historical event showcasing something that was popular at Poplar Hill and because the family lived here after the Revolutionary War, tea was once again allowed in the country and well-loved by the Americans,” said Friend of Poplar Hill Aleta Davis. Guests will be taking part in a “high tea,” a tea that occurred later in the day and resembled a lunchtime meal. To go with your Lady Grey tea, you can also expect to choose from menu items like fruit cups, homemade soup, tea sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam and assorted sweets.

But tea is not the only thing that will be at the Mansion this Thursday. While you sip on your steaming beverage, you will also be witness to a fashion show presented by Chico’s. Sample your Lady Grey tea while you check out the newest fall and winter fashions. Local artist Joan Devaney will also be in attendance with her hand made glass jewelry. “It is beautifully blown glass that it fused with other glasses to create a unique color arrangement,” Davis said.

The tea is $22.00 per person with all proceeds going towards the preservation of Poplar Hill Mansion and specifically funds are currently helping to rebuild Poplar Hill’s piano forte, “so that the instrument can be used again for concerts at the mansion,” Davis said.
