Weekend Happenings: Labor Day Weekend on the Eastern Shore

Labor Day Weekend is finally upon us and we’re having the hardest time realizing (and accepting) that it’s actually here. Where did August go?!? Or summer for that matter!? But rather than being in denial, we’re embracing the fact that Labor Day Weekend is here. We’re even going one step further by actually looking forward to the fall. While Labor Day isn’t technically the end of the summer season, it marks the unofficial end of the summer season as school gets underway. This weekend is jam-packed with events that are all about soaking up everything and anything summer. So whether you just want to hit the beach for a relaxing afternoon or have an event-filled weekend in mind, we guarantee we’ve uncovered the right atmosphere for you.

Labor Day Weekend Art & Craft Festival:

Perfect start to the fall season! This festival offers unique gifts and household items, including oil and watercolor, woodworking, stained glass, furniture, candles and more. The event takes place at the Convention Center on 40th Street from August 29-31 and is free to the public. Hours are 10AM-5PM.

Wings and Wheels Expo

This unique event is held at the Ocean City Municipal Airport on Saturday, August 30th. It’s open to the public from 10AM to 3PM and will be $5 per person. In addition to the opportunity to see private aircraft, custom cars and military vehicles, there will also be food and drink vendors offering items for purchase. There is also a 50/50 raffle and door prizes up for grabs.

OC Sandfest

OC Sandfest is still going on until September 1st. These talented sand sculpting artists come from all over the country to carefully construct massive sand sculptures from North Division Street to Fourth Street, in addition to watching the artist’s work… there will be family attractions and activities all weekend. Each night at 8PM there is an illumination up and down the beach of these beautiful masterpieces. You don’t want to miss this!

Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral

Looks like we’re not the only ones depressed that summer is over… tourists and locals alike are invited to attend the “End of the Summer Celebration” in Bethany Beach. Each Labor Day Monday, Bethany Beach residents mourn the end of summer with the Jazz Funeral. It’s celebrated at 5:30PM at the North end of the boardwalk. Three fabulous bands including The Dixie Cats, The Downtown Dixieland Band and The Jazz Funeral Irregulars provide awesome music and a serious night of fun.

55th Annual Skipjack Races & Festival

Pocomoke knows how to send off summer the right way! This event is nothing but summer activities starting on Saturday, August 30th. Saturday from 4PM to 8PM there is a gospel concert then Sunday the fun really gets going. A parade begins at 1PM with a car show, music all day, dancing under the stars, oyster sandwiches, crab cakes, local arts and craft trucks, historical skipjack races and more. This event is sponsored by the Deal Island-Chance Lions Club and is open to the public.

Season Finale Fireworks Celebration: Opera on a Summer Night

Located in beautiful scenic Delaware, The Freeman Stage in Delaware offers the entertaining and talented Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra performance as another option to end the summer of 2014. What’s more, the night is topped off with a fireworks display!

So as we say farewell to the summer and welcome fall and the holiday season, be sure to take advantage of all of these events to choose from to end it the right way! Whether you want to end it low key at a local festival or head to a concert… the Eastern Shore has all your bases covered!
