Tried To Eat Weed

By: DispatchAdmin via Maryland Coast Dispatch

BERLIN- A Millsboro man was arrested on marijuana possession charges this week after putting weed into his mouth during a traffic stop on Route 113 near Berlin.

Around 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, a Worcester County Sheriff’s Deputy on routine traffic patrol observed a vehicle traveling 78 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone on Route 113 near Jarvis Rd. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was identified as Brian Gardner, 27, of Millsboro and the front seat passenger was identified as Jabriel Walters, 23, also of Millsboro.

During the traffic stop, Walters attempted to conceal marijuana in his mouth. It was also learned Walters was wanted on an outstanding bench warrant for failure to appear in court. He was placed under arrest for the bench warrant and was also issued a criminal citation for possession of marijuana under 10 grams.

Walters was taken before a District Court Commissioner and was released on his own recognizance pending trial. The driver was issued a speeding ticket and received two warnings for other traffic violations.

Suspended Sentence in DUI Crash

OCEAN CITY- A Dover man arrested on drunk-driving and other charges in January after leading Ocean City Police on a chase that ended in a collision with an electrical box that knocked out power in the downtown area pleaded guilty last week and was sentenced to six months, all of which was suspended.

Around 2:40 a.m. on January 31, Ocean City Police on patrol in the area of Coastal Highway and 100th Street observed a vehicle traveling southbound at a high rate of speed. OCPD officers attempted to stop the vehicle in the area of 62nd Street, but the vehicle continued southbound at a high rate of speed.

The driver, later identified as Alex Ryan Little, 24, of Dover, continued to travel southbound on Philadelphia Ave. at a high rate of speed until his vehicle failed to negotiate a turn at North Division Street, struck the center median and collided with an electrical box. The electrical box caught fire and power was briefly disrupted in the south end of Ocean City. Traffic on Route 50 was also disrupted as OCPD officers closed both the eastbound and westbound lanes of the span for about 30 minutes due to the collision.

Little was arrested and charged with two counts of driving under the influence, driving while impaired, eluding uniformed police, negligent driving, reckless driving and multiple traffic violations. Neither Little nor any OCPD officers were injured during the incident. Last week, Little pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and attempting to elude police by failing to stop and was sentenced to six months in jail. The sentence was suspended and Little was placed on probation and fined $500.

Child Porn Conviction

SNOW HILL- A Stockton man, the first arrested under the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office’s new  Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) initiative in December, pleaded guilty last week to two counts of possession of child pornography and was sentenced to 18 months in jail, all but four months of which were then suspended.

In December, Perry William Sharpley, 42, of Stockton, was arrested and charged with three counts of possession of child pornography and three counts of distribution of child pornography. The arrest was the result of the combined efforts of the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, the Maryland State Police Computer Crimes Unit and the Department of Homeland Security.

Through their affiliation with the ICAC Task Force, detectives learned that Sharpley had uploaded an image of known child pornography to a Facebook account he had created. Detectives then obtained Sharpley’s personal laptop computer on which they found three more images of known child pornography.

Last week, Sharpley pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of child pornography and was sentenced to 18 months, all but four of which were then suspended. Sharpley was also placed on probation for three years and was fined $500.

Sharpley’s arrest in December came just days after the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office announced a new initiative to combat crimes against children in the community. The proliferation of the Internet and social networking has created challenges in protecting the most vulnerable in the community, but local law enforcement officials announced a new initiative aimed at combating crimes against children. The ICAC Task Force was created to help federal, state and local law enforcement agencies enhance their investigative responses to offenders to use the Internet, online communications systems or computer technology to sexually exploit children. The program, which has been in place nationwide for over a decade, is funded by the U.S. Department of Justice and its Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

Pittsville Woman Killed in Crash

PITTSVILLE- A Pittsville woman was killed and four others were injured in a bizarre accident in Millsboro last Friday afternoon.

Around 3:30 p.m. last Friday, a Chevy minivan operated by Dakota Price, 21, of Laurel, Del. was traveling west on Conaway Rd. in Millsboro when the vehicle inexplicably left the roadway and into an open field. The vehicle traveled roughly 250 feet across the field and re-emerged on Conaway Rd. where it collided with the driver’s side of a Ford minivan driven by Janice F. Adams, 59, of Pittsville, that was preparing to stop behind a line of other cars at a stop sign.

After the impact, both vehicles traveled off the roadway and ended up in a field. Janice Adams was pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. Patrick G. Adams, 60, of Pittsville, the front seat passenger, was taken to PRMC where he was treated for minor injuries and released. A rear seat passenger, Madelyn E. Price, the driver of the Chevy minivan, was taken to Beebe Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident. There have been no charges filed yet, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Illegal Oyster Sale Sting

BERLIN- A Princess Anne man was charged with selling oysters without a license after getting caught in a sting operation in Worcester County after Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) saw him advertising the sale on the Internet.

Christopher Jester, 31, of Princess Anne, was advertising on the Internet that he was selling “wild caught” oysters harvested in Virginia. Jester does hold a Virginia aquaculture license that allows him to sell oysters from aquaculture beds, but only to a licensed seafood dealer.

Last Thursday, NRP officers got wind of Jester’s advertisement and made arrangements with him to purchase the oysters. Posing as buyers, the officers arranged to purchase five bushels of oysters in untagged bags for $300 and the transaction was set up in Worcester County. After the transaction was completed, Jester was charged by the NRP, with assistance from the Virginia Marine Resources Commission. The cash and the oysters were seized and the oysters were sold to Southern Connection Seafood for $175.

“Even though the oyster harvesting season ended on March 31, our officers continue to monitor both the water and the region’s markets, even those online, to ensure our conservation laws are being obeyed,” said NRP Superintendent Col. George F. Johnson.
