Theatre Announces Fifth Annual Free Shakespeare Tour

By: DispatchAdmin via Maryland Coast Dispatch

BERLIN — Brown Box Theatre Project will bring its 5th Annual Free Shakespeare Tour to over 20 locations throughout Massachusetts and Maryland.

In a continued commitment to providing high-quality free and affordable theatre to communities that crave the performing arts, Brown Box Theatre Project will perform “The Taming of the Shrew” at various locations around Boston and Delmarva from Aug. 21 through Sept. 20.

Deception and desire abound in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, when Christopher Sly, a tinker tricked into believing himself a nobleman, is treated to a play wherein an ornery and willful woman is “tamed” and men will stop at nothing to claim their love. The familiar story is re-imagined through a cast of characters comprised of nine women and one man, who together weave in and out of Shakespeare’s layered world to create a fresh and surprising theatrical experience for all audiences.

“I have been eager to explore The Taming of the Shrew in this unconventional way for over a year, and I am thrilled that we have been able to find such a talented cast of women to dig deeper into one of Shakespeare’s most intriguing comedies,” said Artistic Director Kyler Taustin, who will be spearheading the production. “We have put a big spin on a classic, and I think that audiences will really find something new to love about this play. We are excited to be taking this bold step for our fifth year of staging outdoor Shakespeare, and I can’t wait to bring this production to new locations throughout Massachusetts and Delmarva.”

In addition to performing the play to wide audiences, Brown Box Theatre Project will work within four local Maryland high schools to deliver professional workshops and private productions to the youth. They will work in the classroom and in the theatre to offer an interactive experience with the students so that they may gain a firsthand knowledge of Shakespeare the way it is meant to be experienced — as live theatre.

The workshops will supplement the performances and give the students the opportunity to learn about the themes, language, and characters of Shakespeare’s plays on their feet.

Brown Box Theatre Project’s mission is to bring high-quality theatre to communities that otherwise lack access to the performing arts. The constant goal in all their programming is to bring down barriers that separate potential audiences from live theatre and to introduce the performing arts to the widest audience possible.
