Looking for educational opportunities for your kids this summer? 11 – 14 year olds with an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math have the opportunity to participate in a day-long STEM workshop where they’ll particpate in activities ranging from learning about NASA Programs to microbes. STEM education focuses on integrating the four core disciplines of science, technology, engineering and math while providing real world applications to engage students.

University of Maryland Extension 4-H STEM educators invite Somerset and Wicomico County youth to participate in a one day workshop that offers fun and informative activities relating to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics on Monday, June 23 at UMES, or Wednesday, June 25 at Christ United Methodist Church in Salisbury. Both events will begin at 9am and end at 4:30pm.

The STEM Day Summer Workshop, entitled Rise to the Challenge, is reserved for youth ages 11-14. Planned activities for the day will focus on four separate areas. The first exposes the participants to skyscraper history as well as basic design principles behind their success; next students learn ballooning history and the principles of flight along with NASA’s Scientific Balloon Program; they will then meet the mighty microbes in bread that facilitate its rising; and finish off learning all about the big things happening in the world of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

It’s a full day filled with technology. Registration fees are set at just $20 per person and include a mid-morning snack and all educational materials. Registrants will need to pack their own bagged lunch that does not require refrigeration.

For more information, contact STEM Associate Agent Jocelyn Koller at 410-651-7974 or by email at jckoller@umd.edu.
