OCEAN CITY -- For the fitness minded on Delmarva, S.W.E.A.T (Speed, Weight, Endurance, Agility, Training) promises a professionally crafted workout that routinely produces results no matter the starting fitness level.
“It is really designed to take the individual to the next level no matter what level they are standing on,” said Powerhouse Gym and S.W.E.A.T owner Tony Taghipour.
The idea behind S.W.E.A.T is relatively simple. Classes consist of a variety of exercises at several stations that cover everything from aerobics to isometric moves and strength training. The key, said Taghipour, is that classes are constantly evolving to keep participants from hitting plateaus.
“We want to keep things fresh,” he said. “We want to hit different muscle groups.”
According to Taghipour, “exercise has become a science” and S.W.E.A.T is the end result of years of experience and planning. It is a “multi-functional fitness program” that was designed to work for anyone at any fitness level. It is also meant to combine individual attention with group energy.
“Basically, you get personal training for a fraction of the cost of a personal trainer,” said Taghipour.
The 10- to 15-member classes will often have more than one instructor, he explained, and a careful eye will be kept on each participant. At times, the instructors will even work one-on-one with students to help them tackle difficult exercises or find the right pace. At the same time, students, which Taghipour said are called “athletes,” will be able to “feed off of each other’s energy” because of the group setting, which he claimed has been shown to be the strongest motivation available.
By combining individual training with a class atmosphere and the ability to rotate around stations, S.W.E.A.T is flexible enough for a first-time workout or a lifelong fitness enthusiast, said Taghipour.
“It’s designed for people totally out of condition all of the way to elite athletes,” he said.
Another important point, added Taghipour, is that S.W.E.A.T is also built around the idea of high-payoff with low-impact and strives to eliminate or reduce any chances for injury or burnout.
“Workouts change daily but the program changes weekly,” he said.
First opening in Seaford in September, S.W.E.A.T facilities have spread out across the Eastern Shore, with a location opening in Salisbury in early January and a new grand opening in West Ocean City at Ocean Creek Plaza off Route 50 planned for this Saturday, Feb. 2, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. At the event on Saturday, interested parties will get a chance to explore the facility as well as interact with those experienced in S.W.E.A.T. as well as instructors.
Taghipour revealed that new locations are under consideration for the near future.
“We are aiming at taking this to a national level,” said Taghipour. “I do see a high energy and structured program here with S.W.E.A.T. that I wouldn't be surprised seeing it mature itself to a national level.”
For those who are not able to make it into a S.W.E.A.T facility, there’s still good news: workouts will be mobile.
“We’re in the process of putting these programs on smart aps that you can simply, on a daily basis pull up the exercises that are supposed to be done in the classes if you don’t have time to go to the classes,” he said.
Currently, about 300 of the approximately 1,000 S.W.E.A.T exercises that Taghipour plans to include as video apps have been recorded. Further workout and class information will also be available on the program’s website and Facebook page.
While S.W.E.A.T is designed to be approachable by anyone at any fitness level, Taghipour emphasized that people who want to see results will have to literally buy them with sweat.
“There’s no magic pill to take you to the next level,” he said. “You have to work for it.”
