By: Shawn J. Soper via Maryland Coast Dispatch

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity indoor track teams turned in strong performances at the state 3A-East Region meet this week with middle-of-the-pack team finishes and several outstanding individual efforts including a regional title in the boys’ high jump.

The Seahawks competed in the 3A-East Region meet in Prince George’s County and acquitted themselves well against some of the top track athletes in the state. The Decatur boys finished seventh overall in the region meet with 28 total team points, while Reservoir was first with 84. On the girls’ side, the Seahawks finished ninth overall with 26 team points.

From an individual standpoint, the Seahawks scored well, placing athletes in almost every event. The highlight was the first-place finish in the high jump for Decatur’s Lucas Duker, who brought home the regional title in the event. Decatur’s Khaalid Collick was ninth in the high jump.

In the 300, Decatur’s Kyle Kelly was seventh, while James Mapp was 12th. Kelly was also seventh in the 500, while Jacob Mumford was 12th and Dan Winters was 15th. Winters also finished 16th in the 800. Decatur’s James Phillips was sixth in the 55-meter hurdles. Decatur finished eighth in the 4x200 relay, ninth in the 4x400 and 11th in the 4x800. Beyond the success in the high jump, the Seahawks also placed in other field events including a fifth place finish for Zach Watters in the pole vault, and a third-place finish for Patrick Phillips in the shot put.

On the girls’ side, Decatur’s Layla Fowler was fifth in the 500, while Chloe FauntLeroy came in seventh in the 800. In the relays, Decatur was 11th in the 4x200, 10th in the 4x400 and 11th in the 4x800. Katie Collins finished second in the pole vault, while Kacie Moore was third. Hannah Wilson finished sixth in the high jump, Ameerah Lewis was sixth in the shot put and Annie Brown was 12th in the shot put.
